Our group stayed in the hotel one night and had dinner and breakfast served in the restaurant.

Food was of great quality and quantity - the chef was complimented.

In February, Copenhagen star René Redzepi opened the doors to Noma 2.0. “You taste foods in ways you’ve never thought about tasting them before.” But glowing reviews about the Noma seafood menu are bound to inspire plenty of FOMO — this first round of bookings for New Noma sold out in less than 24 hours.

It’s a new space, a new seafood-focused menu (for now, anyway), and a new start for one of the most written-about restaurants of our time. Everyone else had to wait for the vegetable menu, available late June through mid-September. And just what are critics from Washington, DC and Los Angeles doing flying to Copenhagen to review an expensive tasting menu affair most readers will likely never get into anyway?

In the context of the cooking at Chang’an, it seems so simple.

And as is often the case, tastes wonderful because of it. Those eating here are not here because a fast order of dumplings is what they want; they’re here for an experience. Those who are used to what might be called the San Gabriel Style might be confused walking through the door at Chang’an.In a land of Formica tabletops, only perfunctory design, and certainly no bar, Chang’an offers a certain amount of shock and awe.One needs to approach Chang’an with a table of good eaters, who don’t ask for crispy noodles with duck sauce. Certainly, a certain amount of time should be spent with the Skewer section of the menu. There’s a long bar, with big screens overhead, and a glimpse of the kitchen beyond.There’s a bar to the side, dedicated to the numerous skewers on the menu.It’s a wholly unexpected place, eccentric and even a bit odd. It sits in a plaza across the street from the San Gabriel Square, adjacent to the San Gabriel Hilton. You have to ascend to the third floor of the mall to find it — which is not where restaurants tend to be.The ground floor is heavy with Asian fast service places — Shanghai Dumpling House, Ajisen Ramen, Chengdu Lao Zu Hot Pot and much more — a tour of Asia, and mostly China, in one medium-sized mall. Clearly, this is a restaurant that you need to know about to find.A secondary shock may come when you look at the wine list, which is as long, if not longer, than at many restaurants in town, with some serious reds from France, at serious reds from France prices.
