Noda deals with growing up culturally different in America.

Chinese culture is vastly different from American culture and I had a lot of difficulty coming to terms with the two.

Chinese culture is about finding harmony through balance. The American Dream is rooted in this concept that anyone can change their circumstance and create the life they want regardless of their background. There’s no lack of beauty and wisdom in Chinese tradition and 5000 years of history. In contrary, I believe in fearlessly going after what you want in life, even if it breaks status quo.I believe it’s okay to I believe there’s a sense of freedom that can be achieved through action. In her essay, Noda talks about dealing with knowing and defining herself. The first one, inside, which she is totally comfortable with and feels accepted, and the other one, outside, which she thinks that other people don’t understand her and are often ignorant to her. Others called her as “Other” or “Unalterably alien.” She draws a clear distinction between Japanese-Americans and other Americans.” She feels sorry for her parents and grandparents for going through a difficult time during World War II.She is also mad at community because of the injustice which is done to them during the war.“They went there without resistance, and they offered cooperation as proof of loyalty to America.” She points out that they gave away their freedom willingly, only to prove their loyalty to the country.
